hello,
my name is dwain. i come from a photographic background so i have a
pretty good understanding of color. i worked for 12 years as a
professional photographer before returning to school in 1988. i
received a b.f.a. in 1990 (not that means much) in photography and
ceramics. i began designing web sites in 2000 as well as trying to
unravel the mystery of color management. also in 2000 i began my
journey into the print media arena and knew enough to ask the printer
what color profile he used in photoshop and vector graphics programs for
him to print good art in the material and also if he needed cmyk or rgb
(of course it was cmyk).
recently the light bulb went off, the penny dropped, whatever you want
to call it and for me color management became crystal clear. what i
found is that if you are printing locally, all of your color profiles
for both hardware and software must be the same. i understood that if a
monitor is set to 5000K it skews yellow and a colorimeter neutralizes
the yellow to gray. what i also have found is that if i set my monitor
color settings to "user" settings and set rgb respectively at 50%, make
a print and adjust the brightness of the monitor to the print, i can
color correct, lighten, darken, etc. and make a good print every time.
also what i have recently learned is that a commercial printer with a
commercial digital printer can print from a pdf regardless of the color
profile used and it will render the final product as it is displayed on
my monitor.
i hope to learn much more and maybe contribute something worthwhile from
time to time. it's nice to be accepted to the list, i just hope that
the members will be as accepting of me as the moderators were.
cheers,
dwain
