   They could indeed - the advantage of the virtual appliance approach
   is simplifying support.  The vendor can "bless" one particular
   mini-distribution, and provide that distro in a virtual appliance,
   with their software pre-installed.  It may be possible - even easy,
   for advanced users - to make it works elsewhere, but the vendor
   need not provide *support* for this, thus making the prospect less
   daunting to the company.

Unless the virtual machine will run on all physical machines, it's not
a particularly good solution.
