This may be a point.
On the other side we meet people who tried to hit our expectations like a
feather. Such people might hang on our lips to get our vote, but dont
think further.
I'd more rely on requiring indepth involvement, like building something
and giving feedback about the task. The objections, a student then makes,
can very clearly guide us in out decission. This excludes copy'n paste.

Yes, I'd like to pick Boudewijns suggestion and communicate almost on a
emaillist. Beside transparency, we can require a *nix environment as
fallback. Eigther a student shows she/he can build open source libraries
on Xcode/VC or we make a call to use Linux/BSD. The later are regulary
to meet among all sort of developers.
