True enough. They'll only have to if profiles are stored in
non-standard locations, though!
Most software abstracts the paths and filenames away, and presents users
with a list of profiles to choose from, using their "descriptive" names
rather than filenames. Of course it can only do that if it knows where
to find them.
There's huge scope for improvement in making it easier for software to
identify a suitable profile for devices automatically - but I'm keen to
see it done in a way that doesn't make it harder for users to use
existing software until it's updated to support new developments.

Sadly in practice it's never that simple. The user can't just nominate
a printer - at the very least the user will need to nominate a printer
with a specific set of print settings, and printing onto a specific type
of paper. That's how PhotoPrint's "presets" work - they bundle up the
printer settings and associated profile into a "preset" file, to solve
this exact problem - though of course this is neither systemwide nor
automatic.
All the best,
