That's not a robust way of signalling the profiling intention though.

There's a big difference between "this CMYK is in the device
space defined by this ICC profile" and "this CMYK is always the
destination device space, irrespective of what that actually is".

If PDF doesn't have a format way of signalling the latter, then some
mechanism outside of PDF needs to be used.
