[Openicc] Driver Settings, ICC-Profiles, Printer Calibration

Hello all,
An Inkjet driver can be set up to very differnt targets before a
profiling testchart is printed.
If we would agree on calibration targets like e.g. the G7 process:
http://www.idealliance.org/industry_resources/branding_media_and_color/g7

We would get setup printers to a state, where they are looking very
similar, before (!!!) they are profiled.

G7 describes a a printer calibration with 1D LUTS for every CMYK channel
leading to:
- Target gradation for K
- Target gradation for CMY
- Target greybalance for CMY

Printer with CMYK + X color can in most cases reasonably calibrated if,
there is meaningful Link from CMYK to CMYK+X

The definition of calibration targets makes it much easier to use
generic ICC-profiles for different media classes.

The link between driver setting and ICC profile, would be mainly
orientated the calibration target for the setting and not between all
individual parameters of the driver setting.

Calibration of a printer could either be done
- with spectrophometer like a ColorMunki or
- visually by comparing numbered CMY and K Patches of the uncalibrated
printer with some printed references an put into the calibration
software the number of the CMY and K patches, which are matching
visually matching the reference.

Currently a pure G7 approach is not compatible to Open Source, because
only parts are published open. The main algorithems are hidden and are
integrated either in closed source software for endusers or in
commercial G7 API for developers.

On the other hand, I don´t see any problems to develop open source
calibration targets for some media classes lieke e.g.
- plain paper
- matte inkjet paper
- glossy photopaper

I could give some input from a consultants perspective, but I´m not a
developer to write code. So if anybody is interested, to work on this
item, just contact me.

Best regards
Jan-Peter
