It's really kinda beyond a solution other than the pro apps running their own pdftoraster RIP and substituting it instead of Apple's. That is a potential support nightmare of its own to rewrite PPDs from other manufacturers.

I don't think you have to worry about it all that much. If it were to happen, it would be accidental and it would get fixed. On Mac OS X, it's not accidental, it's by design. So there you go.
