ICC appears already prepared for the registration of meta tag data.
I usually tent to wait some months that things can settle. That helps 
typical with improved quality. The approach covers monitors, cameras and 
soon printers. While the former can be calibrated by a set of almost fixed 
properties, the later will be based on vendor dependent PPD content. So 
for Gutenprint that might work with a fixed set I guess.
