I remember some discussion about adding this kind of functionality to
cairo a few months ago, but it rapidly spiraled into architecture
astronaut territory when people started adding requirements such as
named colors, CMYK toning and lots of other crazy stuff. Then the
thread died out and no code was written.

Maybe somebody just needs to spend some time getting the basics (RGB)
right in cairo and then that's at least GTK, mozilla and a few others
covered.
