If I understood Michael Sweet from Apple correctly, then the OutputIntent 
inside a PDF is intented to interprete DeviceXXX/ numbers as is, without 
implicite colour convertion. Assumedly Adobe stands behind the PDF/A,E,X 
specifications.

However that mechanism does not touch the more basic driver states 
you proposed for calibration. Unfortunately the ICC spec has an issue with 
n-channel to what you call logical print channel conversion in the current 
specification. Without that calibration software could simply send 
DeviceN/ to printers in order to measure native behaviour.
