urgh.  if i can get my local armel system running again (it's stuck in a
bad state at the moment), i'd be willing to try to replicate this, but
it may take me a while to get the system up and running again.

It looks to me like the bus error on sparc is coming from bash itself, no?

In other software, i've seen bus errors on sparc due to misaligned
memory access (e.g. something like an offset into an allocated array of
chars being used as an int -- when the offset isn't divisible by the
native word size (4 for sparc32), this platform of CPU throws a bus
error rather than degrading to slower piecemeal memory access)

I can see if i can dig up access to a porterbox for the platform in
question.
