Well, there's no technical reason, it just makes the debug output easier
to read as a tab looks quite a lot like a space sometimes (and tab is
the delimiter for spawned backends). There's also a limit on insane
chars, like $, \ / etc to try and avoid people passing crazy things to
scripted backends.
