Numbers sound fairly sane. AFAIK, Debian's core repositories update I
think 2/day (although I've heard plans to up this to 4/day or more,
depending on hardware load issues), but most users are using mirrors,
some of which are (probably) sync'ed to the main update periods,
others probably only update 1/day (or less in some annoying cases...).
I seem to remember reading that Ubuntu updates about 1/hour.

OTOH, for most users, I suspect that 1/day is more than enough for
updating the cache.
