Ok, a _little_ better. Now I get a dialog with the content:

Transaction error
Error in Transaction Processing

Which is a textbook example of a non-helpful error message.
I wonder where the helpful diagnostic message went that I saw the
other day (see the first mail in the thread). I don't see it in the
packagekitd output today...
