With regard to bugs like this:

I've added a configure option --enable-developer which you should only
set if you are really sure you want to override the default.

I'll just turn off DEVELOPMENT_RELEASE tomorrow, which will set this key
to false by default, so we shouldn't get any bugs when backends do silly
(but recoverable) things and libnotify boxes come up.

When 0.1.10 is out of the door, I'll turn back on DEVELOPMENT_RELEASE.
