Sorry, I completely misread and thought you said getopt not optparse.

in case you're bored, here's the Python project's rational for a third
parsing library:

Obviously if python 2.6 is a hard dependency I can re-implement this in
optparse, but I thought that Mac OSX was the blocker for python 2.7
features a year ago.
