I think it's a good idea to keep the warnings/errors global for the sake
of consistency. The current setup (-Wvla, -Wdeclaration-after-statement)
only affects the parts changed in these two patches.

The errors reported below are not caught by -Wvla, since they are not
variable length arrays. I don't think there's a gcc warning to catch
those.
