It was the reason I gave in an off-list mail for not pushing the
otherwise uncontroversial parts of this series, since I think putting
wrong numbers in the commit log is worse than no numbers at all.

Indeed; in particular, private mail is almost never the right choice
unless you really want to say something non-public.
