Haven't tried pixman yet but I just tried that for cairo but it gives me 
a different error:-

     fatal: unable to update url base from redirection:
     asked for: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/cairo/cairo 
/info/refs?service=git-upload-pack
     redirect: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/users/sign_in

"users/sign_in" is a bit confusing - almost like it thinks I'm trying to 
push rather than pull ?!?
