pkg-config

I get the following:

export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig

./configure
...
...
checking for pkg-config... /usr/local/bin/pkg-config
checking for pkg-config >= 0.9.0... 0.19
checking for gtk+-2.0 >= 2.2.0... not found

I find gtk+-2.0.pc in /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig/gtk+-2.0.pc

What is wrong here? I have several others *.pc my ./configures can not find.

Appreciate any help.
