"Could not find the pkg-config"

I am attempting to compile gnucash 2.0 on an Intel Mac OSX 10.4, with  
the following statement;

./configure --with-g-wrap-prefix=/sw --enable-compile-warnings

And I keep getting this message;

.
checking for pkgconfig... no
configure: error: Could not find the pkg-config (or pkgconfig) program.

I have installed pkgconfig 0.20-2 via fink.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.
