| Is there any valid reason for keeping the bundled libpopt ?

Good question, and likewise: should we drop the bundled glib 1.x and
build-depend on ourselves and a glib? This will make bootstrapping
somewhat harder which will affect from-source distros like Gentoo, but
will allow us to cut what is essentially an unmaintained piece of code
that gets less and less testing due to the support for the system glib.

(This does not affect popt, since it doesn't use pkg-config to build,
at least 1.16 doesn't.)
