| I sent a couple of patches to update the autotools configuration here: [1]

I've applied the one switching from configure.in to .ac.

I'm not entirely sure I want to require autoconf 2.63 yet, people use
pkg-config on some really ancient systems.  Ditto for libtool 2.2.

The ACLOCAL_AMFLAGS bit should be safe, I think.

On the other hand, as long as people build from tarballs, it should be
relativetly safe.

More input from others would be much appreciated.
