I've done a little more work on the branch mentioned before, see:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/plymouth/log/?h=plugin-rework

I've also put up a sample OLPC theme here:

http://www.freedesktop.org/~halfline/olpc.tar.bz2

To try it, build the branch I mentioned, then go to

/usr/share/plymouth/themes

untar the olpc.tar.bz2 and run:

plymouth-set-default-theme olpc

/usr/libexec/plymouth/plymouth-update-initrd

This is using the glow (now named two-step) plugin.

We still need to add charlie's plugin to the branch.

The idea is, we can keep the C code upstream, along with good sample
themes that use the C code. But keep the branding, trademarked
images, etc, downstream.

I'll probably be merging the branch to master soon unless you've got
any concerns with it.
