Sorry, I just figured it out...I had done this:
echo options i915 modeset=0 > /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf
to turn off kms for my intel driver because it was causing my lvds
monitor to turn white during the boot sequence. I took that out, and
added "nomodeset" to my kernel command line instead in /etc/default/grub
and now it's working as expected. Hopefully this will help somebody else!
