Thanks Fabian - I guess I should have prefaced that I have all of this
working (with the bloated initramfs) under rhel6.  Once I try to migrate to
rhel7, everything goes to hell.  I cannot even set debugu and get output to
a file :/

I'll of course figure it out, and try your patches tomorrow when I get back
on the subject.  The only difference is that I was using basic plymouth*
commands under "init" in rhel6, but rhel7 uses systemd, so I moved to
systemd-ass-password, etc - still no go..

Thanks for the reference to the patches though - I am sure I can finally
shrink the initramfs back to a sane size once I get the scripts going..

I sure wish systemd let the basic commands still work..  echo, read,
etc...  Leonnart sure thought he wasw important when he changed all basic
functionality...  He should be shot for not making a transition layer..
