So, after reading the patch I had a much better understanding of how the
project is structured. Can anyone explain why we shouldn't be
autotooling it? 

It certainly seems to make life easier for both developers and
distributors, for example I find

pretty hard to read myself. Maybe because it's some home grown format;
it just looks foreign to me.
