Some help in what Debian's poppler could be doing wrong would be nice; we have
almost no patching of the upstream source:

Perhaps poppler expects something but doesn't ensure it's present when
configured?

Or perhaps it's a runtime expectation which we miss.

BTW, the Ubuntu poppler package is exactly the same one, so I would be
surprized it actually comes from poppler, yet this only happens with poppler
renderers.
