Under Fedora 9 (x86_64), this kind of works for me: The print preview of only
one page takes about 60 s, but the quality is okay. If I print this one page
into a pdf file, the result is 2.4 MB big, while the original document (270
pages) is 4.5 MB. To open this one pdf-printed file, it takes about 3 mins on
my machine.

Using:
Cairo 1.6.4 1.fc9
Poppler 0.8.1 2.fc9
Evince 2.22.2 1.fc9

But regarding the speed and the size of the file and the speed, I still would
not consider this as solved.
