This problem is also in xpdf 3.02, and the confusion with polarity and invert
could have been a factor in the imagemask issue of bug 22216
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22216 although 22216 is a
different issue.  This new patch does not correct the -level1sep rendering of
the pdf in the 22216 report.
