I was testing and found an unrelated problem.
If the PaintType is 2, the new code gets a postscript error because it doesn't
write a color.  When setpattern is called with a pattern of PaintType 2, it
expects a color on the stack under the pattern.
The old code gets an error also.

I made the attached file with ps2pdf from gs9.04.
The ps is an example from the postscript language reference manual.
