Actually i cheat

./autogen.sh --enable-gtk-doc
make
make distcheck
in a separate shell
  cd version-foo/test
  sudo ln -s ../../../test/unittestcases/ .
  sudo ln -s ../../../test/tests/ .
  cd ..
  cd ..
  wait for compilation to finish
  make distclean
