The differences seem to be due to changes from xpdf, rather than changes
by poppler.

My printer (also QMS-script, but colour and PSVersion 3010.042)
was happy to print the first to letter, but for the second at
first complained that there was no A4 paper, before continuing
on and printing it.  (It is configured to use the nearest size.)

It may be that xpdf’s current level2 output isn’t compatible with
some older level2 printers?

Did you get any errors back on the netcat socket?

If not, try with Print PS Errors setting set to true.
(On mine it is in print menu, ps settings.)

Perhaps it will explain what it dislikes.
