I have and I can confirm the freetype renders the ttf and otf files
differently. You previously mentioned that Adobe contributed a rendering 
engine to freetype and indeed ftview shows that different engines are
used to render different fonts by type, I attached a screenshot.

Many thanks for helping to narrow down the issue. I'll open a ticket
on the freetype tracker.
