pdffonts show that the MTExtra font is not embedded. It is not one of the
standard 14 fonts (Time,Helevetica,Courier,Symbol) so you will need to install
the font to view the PDF. That is not a bug in poppler.

I tried printing the file with okular and pdftops and the x with two dots is
printed correctly. Given the age of this bug I assume the problem has been
fixed.
