[poppler] FontInfo::getToUnicode()

Can anyone tell me what the meaning of the subject call is?

From reading the code, I guess it means that the text in that font is actually 
unicode encoded, and needs to be translated to a unicode representation 
before being looked up as to find the glyph. However the whole unicode thing 
isn't very clear to me (even after reading most of section 5 of the PDF 
spec), and I'd really like to get my documentation right.
