Yes, Per's solution in #33094 works very well and has solved my problems on
Ubuntu Lucid. I don't think we need to worry about a desktop Debian install not
having Perl (or an embedded system needing xdg-open to work flawlessly).

I hope that patch (and the related symlink patch) gets incorporated in the
mainline.
