xdg-open demo.odt will open LibreOffice
xdg-open http://www.test.com/demo.odt will open the system browser

could we have something like

xdg-open --mime http://www.test.com/demo.odt that would open Libre Office and
give the URL on the command line?

Purpose: webDAV integration
