Ran

configure --prefix=/home/rfirstaid/xdg-utils/install
make

got the following error...

Note: Writing xdg-settings.1
/usr/bin/xmlto txt desc/xdg-desktop-menu.xml
No way to convert HTML to text found.
Try either installing text web browser(lynx/w3m/links) or use option --with-fop

Makefile:25: recipe for target 'scripts' failed

made the specified changes to the scripts/Makefile and it installed and worked
with man
