xdg-mime doesn't do queries itself, but relies on DE-specific tools.

For example, on gnome,
gio info ...
or
gvfs-info ...


Further, those tools rely on the system's shared-mime-info database

In short, this is very likely not a xdg-utils issue, but one in either
shared-mime-info or DE tools themselves


workarounds include:
* Add legacy application-x-gzip to supported mimetypes (to ark.desktop)
* update your DE tools and/or shared-mime-info
