xdg-utils provides a uniform way to access the e-mail composer.. it
doesn't provide a uniform way to configure it. It would be nice if there
was, but I don't see it happen anytime soon. So you will have to deal
with configuring it in a desktop-specific way...

http://portland.freedesktop.org/wiki/EmailConfig has some pointers in
that direction. It would be a good place to add a section with
instructions for how a web-mail provider could configure its service to
be the default e-mailer.
