[Portland] SVG support?

Testing showed that the various linux desktop environments do not support SVG icons very consistently and as such it can not be guaranteed that an SVG icon will be rendered correctly or at all. I suggest to install pre-rendered PNG's in various sizes instead.

Subject: [Portland] SVG support?

I can see in the CVS logs that SVG support has been dropped:

PatchSet 293
Date: 2006/09/19 06:33:46
Author: bastian
Branch: HEAD
Tag: (none)
Log:
No support for SVG icons

Members:
        scripts/xdg-icon-resource:1.23->1.24
        scripts/xdg-icon-resource.in:1.18->1.19
        scripts/desc/xdg-icon-resource.xml:1.9->1.10
        scripts/html/xdg-icon-resource.html:1.7->1.8
        scripts/man/xdg-icon-resource.1:1.9->1.10
        tests/xdg-utils-usecases/t.12-svg_icon_render:1.4->1.5(DEAD)
        tests/xdg-utils-usecases/t.13-desktop_file_svg_icon:1.1->1.2(DEAD)

Why was this done? We are currently installing our SVG icon directly into
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps (and PNG icons into
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps etc), but would like to switch to
xdg-utils. Does this mean that we cannot install a scalable icon?
