I beg to differ. I opened
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28394 in early June 2010,
with a patch. It's still open, and holding up another bug I found.
Does anyone care?

The whole idea of xdg-utils seems incredibly useful, but the
implementation is full of bugs (eg. spaces in filenames cause
problems) and it's one of the least active projects I've encountered
so far. I've held off using xdg-utils for anything in open source
projects I work on because they're not up to scratch, the mailing
lists are almost dead and you seem unwilling to accept patches.
