Comment:

 Let me add my own vote for support of 24-bit samples.  I use professional
 audio gear, in particular today an Alesis io|2 USB audio box.  It only
 supports 24-bit samples, and it seems that ALSA dmix has trouble syncing
 when I use plughw:2 with Pulse to hide the sample size.

 Please consider making 24-bit samples a first-class citizen of PulseAudio.
