Comment:

 Sorry. "It's what esound does." is not true. That's what the Ubuntu-
 patched version of esd does. I am no Ubuntu user. The ubuntu guys are
 welcome to supply me a patch that is reasonably clean to merge.

 I am marking this as wontfix now, since we follow ESDs upstream behaviour.
 Feel free to reopen this issue if you can provide me with a clean patch
 which includes a configure check to detect these patched ubuntu systems.
