I was hoping to just use the "PPA" (i.e. contribs) Ubuntu package which
has 8 patches added.

Yeah. 0.9.13 seems really broken. I'm going back to 0.9.10.
I was hoping 0.9.13 would fix the stuttering I posted to the mailing list
about. Given the lack of responses I figured it was just one of those
"need to upgrade" things.
But I can confirm that even with the patch in this bug I still get the:
