 I've seen similar things myself with resume. When killing pulseaudio
 gnome-power-manager can also go nuts and start eating cpu cycles and ram
 (clearly a leak).... I've had it use >1Gb before I killed it (otherwise
 the OOM would have kicked in at some point)....
