 Logging in as root: event sounds OK, PA manager server description has
 correct default audio device.
 Logging in as ordinary user: no event sounds. PA manager server
 description shows wrong default audio device. All attempts to correct this
 have failed.
 No other audio problems, Skype works OK.
 FYI: had to remove PA alsa plugins to hear startup sound. Still, no audio
 problems except as noted on this ticket.
