 I just follow what the automake docs suggest:

 http://sources.redhat.com/automake/automake.html#Obsolete-macros

 If that's not correct with your version of automake, please file a bug to
 automake.

 I now bumped the required automake version in configure.ac to make clear
 that this might not work on old automake versions.
