#379: PulseAudio stopped working with built-in speakers

As of yesterday, my built-in speakers stopped working with PulseAudio.
It's not the speakers fault: if I close down the PulseAudio daemon, go
into GNOME Sound Preferences, and choose OSS, I can play sounds through
the speakers. But if I restart the daemon and choose PulseAudio, nothing
 comes out.

In the Volume Manager, I can see the speakers listed as the output device
"ALSA PCM on front:0 (STAC92xx Analog) via DMA", but directing streams to
 this output has no effect.

I'm attaching a log of the following activity:
 1. Starting PulseAudio
 2. Pressing "Test" for "Sound Playback" in "GNOME Sound Preferences"
(the stream is directed to "ALSA PCM on front:0 (STAC92xx Analog) via
 DMA").
